Blackberries
Who would have thought that these little berries would be packed with so much that is good for you? And, with only 60 calories per one cup serving, they are definitely a snack worth keeping handy.
Uses: Besides indulging in a handful when you get a snack craving, blackberries are delicious baked into pies, made into jams, as a topping for pound cake or even as an edible garnish.
Nutritional Information: In addition to being a low-calorie snack, blackberries provide over 50% of your daily supply of Vitamin C (based on a 2,000 calorie diet). Plus, they are rich in antioxidants and are one of the few fruits that contain Vitamin E (which studies have shown might help prevent or delay the development of cardiovascular disease and cancer.)
Selection & Storage: As with all fresh berries, blackberries are very fragile and need to be handled gently when rinsing. When selecting, look for blackberries with deep, even coloring and a nice shine. Store blackberries in a single layer between paper towels or keep in the plastic container you bought them in until ready to use. For best flavor, use within two to three days and do not wash until ready to use.
