Just Arrived for Spring

'Gold Nugget' Mandarins

'Gold Nugget' MandarinsA cross between two non-commercial varieties, the Wilking and Kincy, the ‘Gold Nugget’ Mandarin was developed at the University of California, Riverside in the 1950s. Commercial planting began in the mid 1980s. This seedless mandarin ripens much later than other mandarin varieties – from March to mid-summer. With a rich, sweet taste and bright orange rind that is slightly bumpy, ‘Gold Nugget’ Mandarins peel relatively easily and are exceptionally juicy.

So, when other mandarin varieties start to go out of season, look for ‘Gold Nuggets’ in your Produce department to satisfy your mandarin craving.

Irish Picks
A St. Patrick’s Day celebration is never complete without a selection of authentic Irish foods and flavors. Before March 17th has come and gone, come on in and pick up some of these classics!

Favs from Ireland
Irish Soda Bread – Irish Soda Bread is a classic, quick bread from Ireland which takes its name from the fact that it uses baking soda for leavening. Ours is made with buttermilk, baked fresh daily and has raisins added.
Cabbage Soup Mix – A mix of green cabbage, corn, red and yellow bell peppers, zucchini, onions and red and yellow potatoes diced and ready to sauté for an easy, full flavored pot of cabbage soup.
Kerrygold Irish Cheese – Celebrate Saint Patrick’s Day with cheese from the heart of Ireland. Choose from Blarney Castle, a semi-soft cheese with mild flavor or try Dubliner, with a flavor that is similar to Parmesan and Cheddar.
McCann’s Steel Cut Irish Oatmeal – Made with 100% whole grains, these steel cut oats make a thicker, heartier oatmeal. In contrast to rolled oats, steel cut oats are minimally processed and maintain their natural flavor and texture.
Kerrygold Irish Butter – Made with milk from grass-fed cows, you'll quickly notice the sweet flavor and rich texture of Kerrygold Irish Butter. Great for cooking or baking, making flakier pie crusts and silkier sauces.

Your St. Patty's Day Brews
• Guinness – With its unique thick, creamy head, which results from being mixed with nitrogen when being served, this popular dry stout originated in Dublin, Ireland and boasts a distinct flavor of unfermented roasted barley. The proper way to serve Guinness is to use what they call a "double pour." Pour 1/2 the bottle into a glass and let it settle. Then pour the rest of the bottle, creating a nice creamy head.
• Smithwicks – Founded by John Smithwick in 1710, Smithwick's beer was originally brewed in St. Francis Abbey in Kilkenny, Ireland. The brewery is situated on the site where monks brewed ale since the 14th century and still has ruins of the original abbey on its grounds. It is Ireland's oldest operating brewery.
• Harp Irish Lager – First brewed in 1960 in The Great Northern Brewery in Dundalk, Ireland, this pale, almost straw-like colored beer is brewed using golden barley and hops and has a smooth satisfying lager taste.
• Black & Tan – This combination of two Irish beers has become an American favorite around St. Patrick's Day and it's easy to make at home. Fill half your glass with Harp Irish Lager and top with Guinness poured over a spoon to help keep the beers separated.
