Fresh Spring Salads
Light, fresh salads go great with warm weather and our stores have a wide selection of fresh, delicious ingredients to inspire a variety of salads. Our fresh Maché and Organic Earthbound salad mixes are a simple way to get things started. Then it’s up to your imagination to find just the right combination of nuts, fruits, cheese, dressings and other special ingredients.
Tips for the Perfect Salad
Start with the Basics – Great Greens
Our Organic Earthbound salad mixes are great on their own, but are also great when you mix them together to create just the right mix for your salad. For more crunch combine our Romaine Salad Blend with Baby Mixed Greens. Or combine our fresh Maché, with its sweet, delicate nutty green, with Arugula for a unique blend of greens with a lovely presentation. No matter what lettuce mix you choose for your salad, be sure its thoroughly rinsed, dried and served chilled.
Sweeten up with Fruits
Balancing well with tangy vinaigrettes and salty cheeses, sweet fruit really pulls a salad together. Some ideas:
- Sprinkle fresh sliced apples, pears or strawberries; or add dried cherries, apricots and cranberries
- Combine fresh chopped raspberries with your favorite raspberry vinaigrette to give it a little flair.
- Add chopped Turkish apricots with apricot nectar, extra virgin olive oil and white wine vinegar for a divine apricot vinaigrette.
Add Flavor with Imported Cheeses
Cheeses such as Feta, Blue Cheese and Gorgonzola work best crumbled into salads, while others like Brie and Goat Cheese are best served in slices and rolled in fresh herbs such as parsley or chives. These fine cheeses not only taste great but will really add to the presentation.
Create Texture & Crunch with Nuts
Nuts add a great dimension to salads with their texture and crunch. Roasting and toasting your nuts will really bring out their nutty flavor and will add a bit more crunch to your salad. With a little sugar you can also create candied nuts, which balance wonderfully with a tangy vinaigrette dressing. Combine 1 part sugar and 2 parts of your favorite nuts in a skillet at medium heat until sugar melts into a light brown liquid. Once the sugar completely coats the nuts, pour the nuts over aluminum foil to cool.
Get Creative with Other Ingredients
Salads are great because of their versatility. Depending on the ingredients you choose, they can work well as an appetizer, side dish, or as the main course. If you want to keep it light but add some extra flavors to the mix, use red onion, celery, or shallots. To make your salad suitable for the main course, add creamy avocado, marinated shrimp or grilled chicken.
