Diversity, Equity & Inclusion

At The Fresh Market, our people make all the difference.

As a company, we have the reputation for offering the highest-quality fresh food while providing the best experience for our guests. We achieve this level of excellence through a group of people who bring their unique talents to work each day and to the communities we serve.

We refer to our employees as team members because every job is important, and everyone can make a difference. We are committed to creating a culture where our differences are recognized, where all team members’ voices and values are celebrated, and we ensure that everyone has equal access to the same opportunities. And we aspire to create this culture for our team members because our people are unique and valued.

Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Mission Statement: Bring our values to life by creating a culture that strengthens our team members, suppliers, guests and communities through recognizing and celebrating our differences.

Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Strategy

Since reshaping corporate culture takes time and a commitment from all team members and partners, we have established strategies for each of our key constituents and are excited to embark on this journey together. We will celebrate small wins, build on our successes, and learn from each other as we create a culture where everyone is welcomed and recognized. Ultimately, we aspire to be recognized as having one of the best cultures for diversity, equity and inclusion in the retail industry, and one that enhances innovation and business growth.

Culture >> Intentionally listen, learn and utilize different perspectives, experiences and opinions of TFM’s diverse workforce to create a more inclusive culture.

Team Members >> Hire, promote and retain team members to build a diverse workforce that represents the communities where TFM does business.

Suppliers >> Increase the number and notoriety of diverse suppliers, vendors and consultants utilized to procure goods and services for TFM.

Communities >> Expand, strengthen and communicate corporate and store support of organizations and activities in ways that positively drive diversity, equity, inclusion, empowerment and opportunities in the communities TFM serves.

Business Resource Groups

We currently have Five Business Resource Groups (BRGs) to help us amplify underrepresented voices within the organization, foster an inclusive environment, and to carry out our Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives.

These volunteer, employee led groups are embraced by our team members and each group has extended its work beyond the organization and into the communities we serve. As The Fresh Market grows, and the need for more groups arise, we strive to offer welcoming BRGs where each team member can find themselves represented in the culture we’ve created.

Team recognition for FAM's Holiday Meal Giveaway

“The PRiDE! BRG brings awareness and education to those outside of the LGBTQIA+ community. I have a non-binary family member and what the BRG provided on The Fresh Market Academy was really helpful for me. I gained a better understanding of why using their preferred pronouns is so important.” – Paula Stop, Director of Total Rewards

"As a newer employee with TFM, it’s been incredibly helpful for me to be a part of the FAM BRG and it’s made me feel even more welcome in the company. As any working parent or caregiver knows, it’s a balancing act that comes with a lot of unique and often frustrating challenges, and it’s so helpful to know I’m not the only one dealing with those challenges here at TFM. It’s especially meaningful to me to be a part of a group that is not only a support for each other but is actively working to build even more support systems for parents and caregivers in TFM working life. The solidarity means so much!" – Ingrid McCarthy, Food Developer

WAVE BRG members volunteering with the Guilford Urban Farmer’s Initiative (GUFI)

"One of my favorite experiences with WAVE (Women’s Advocacy Vision Empowerment) was volunteering with my coworkers for the Guilford Urban Farming initiative. We trellised plants, created pollinator habitats, and painted signs! It was a fun way to get to know my coworkers a bit better and help our local community. Supporting our local food systems is so important, and it was nice to see everyone rally around a great cause." – Sara Wolf, Pricing Analyst
