Ready to drink pink? It’s the perfect time to sip rosé! Winemakers craft rosé by juicing red grapes and then allowing the juice to soak with the skins for a few days. Once the juice takes on a lovely pink color, the skins are removed and the juice is allowed to ferment.

The color can range from pale pink to vividly bright depending on the varietals used and the winemaking techniques. A general rule is that lighter hues yield softer fruit notes, lower tannins and a drier finish, while darker-pink wines are often bursting with fruit flavors and have a higher tannin level.

Although rosé is made in just about every wine region, France is the main producer. Here are some of our French favorites:

Chateau de Eslcans Whispering Angel Considered one of the world’s greatest rosés, this wine is made from grapes grown on an exceptional site in Provence. Primarily a blend of Grenache, Vermentino and Cinsault, this fresh and pretty rosé features flavors of white peach, mango and white cherry fruit. Hints of watermelon and cranberry lead to a dry finish with balanced acidity.

Gerard Bertrand Cote des Roses Rosé Fresh, fruity and bold, this show-stopping wine celebrates the Mediterranean Art de Vivre. Its originality extends beyond the rose-shaped bottle, with notes of summer fruits, cassis and red currant that stem from a blend of Grenache, Cinsault and Syrah from the Languedoc region of France. The finish is fresh and full with notes of strawberry and lingering citrus.

Notorious Pink This wine is pale pink in color and made from the finest 100% Grenache from the south of France. Aromas of ripe peaches, pear, honey and orange blossom lead to flavors of melon, sweet cherry and peach with hints of spice and minerality. The finish is well-balanced but not too dry, which makes this rosé easy to enjoy with or without food.

Jean Luc Colombo Cape Bleue Rosé Jean Luc is hailed as a French winemaking wizard for a reason. This stellar rosé is made from Syrah and Mourvedre grown in the region of Provence. On the nose, subtle hints of peach, rose petal, watermelon and tropical fruit awaken the senses. On the palate, this wine is dry and complex with flavors of raspberries and fresh cherry and intriguing notes of fennel and pepper.

Mediterranean Reds

Mediterranean wine regions are characterized by their long growing seasons of moderate to warm temperatures and little rainfall. The winters are mild and the summers are long. That’s why the wine regions that pepper the Mediterranean coastline are responsible for a large percentage of the world’s wine production.

These palate-pleasing reds beautifully highlight the flavors and terroir of Mediterranean wine regions:

E. Guigal Cotes du Rhone Rouge The Guigal family is known for the standards of quality it upholds. This French wine is Syrah-based, big and rich, bursting with ripe berry fruit flavors. Distinctive notes of black olive, smoky earth, pepper and dark fruit emerge in this inky-hued Cotes du Rhone. It’s silky-smooth, pleasantly spiced and a delicious and elegant wine all-around.

Di Majo Norante Sangiovese The Di Majo estate is located along the Italian coastline and cultivates more than 200 acres under vine. Hand-harvested and made from 100% Sangiovese, this wine is bright red in color with aromas of violets and red berries and undertones of leather and anise. On the palate, Di Majo Norante Sangiovese is dry and mellow with smooth tannins and refreshing flavors of cherry and cranberry.

Tarima Monastrell This deep, garnet-hued wine is 100% Mourvèdre, aged 20 months in French oak and sourced from the oldest vines of the Spanish estate. Tarima Hill Monastrell boasts a memorable bouquet of dark red cherries, a hint of leather and lively acidity. On the palate, the wine offers full-bodied notes of black berries, plums and licorice with an elegant but persistent finish.

Borsao Tres Picos Garnacha The grapes used to make Borsao Tres Picos Garnacha are grown in mountain vineyards in the Borja region of Spain. Made from 100% old vine Grenache, this wine is a very intense cherry-red color with a hint of purple. Aromas of ripe red fruit blend harmoniously with floral notes. On the palate, this wine is well-structured and rich with flavors of blackberry, plum and a touch of leather and vanilla, with soft, silky tannins on the finish.
