Game Day Game Plan
On the first Sunday in February, millions of viewers will gear up for a night of football, friends and food—lots of it! To elevate your spread, we’ve put together the ultimate party food playbook. Plan your eats quarter by quarter, so you’ll finish the night as the MVH (Most Valuable Host/Hostess) of the game.
First Quarter: Keep It Light
Before kickoff, set the stage for your guests by putting out a spread of chips, dips and light appetizers. Here are some fan favorites from The Fresh Market:
- The Fresh Market Tortilla Chips, guacamole and fresh salsa. Our guacamole is available in a three varieties – Spicy for those who like it hot, Chef Style for medium heat with lots of flavor, and Original, a deliciously savory and mild classic. We also offer fresh salsas that taste homemade, including hot salsa, classic pico, salsa verde and more.
- Party Platters, of course! They’re always a hit and are an easy way to please a crowd. Order an Italian Antipasto, Mediterranean or Colorful Crudité Platter to impress your hungry guests!
- Our Fruit & Veggie Medley Bowls offer a bounty of freshly-prepared fruit and vegetables for any gathering. Each one is perfectly arranged for a bright and beautiful presentation.
- Delectable dips from the deli - delicious served hot or cold:
Spinach Artichoke Dip: This is our own recipe made with spinach, cream cheese, artichoke hearts, feta and garlic and pairs perfectly with our French Rounds.
Spicy Southwest Dip: Made with a blend of cheeses, red and green peppers, jalapeño peppers and Tabasco Sauce blended with mayonnaise, we love this dip with our tortilla chips and fresh, crunchy veggies.
NEW Spicy Ham & Cheddar Dip: This new, addictively good dip features a rich and flavorful blend of cream cheese, sour cream, cheddar cheese, green onion, ham and hot sauce.
Want to take your dip to the next level? Swap your bowl for a boule! It’s easy to do, adds visual interest to your spread and gives you plenty of bread for dipping.
Want it hot? Here’s how to heat your bread boule:
Preheat oven to 350˚F. Slice off the top crust of the bread boule and set aside. Use a knife to cut out the center of the bread boule, being careful not to cut through the bottom of the bread. Cut from the center of the bread into cubes to toast. Place the cubed bread on a sheet pan and bake 10-12 minutes or until the cubes are lightly toasted. Set aside.
Place the bread boule filling into the hollowed-out bread. Replace the crust on top of the bread boule to cover the filling. Wrap the entire boule in foil and place on sheet pan.
Bake at 350˚F for 30-40 minutes or until the filling is thoroughly heated. Unwrap from foil and place on serving platter with toasted bread cubes and celery sticks. Remove top of boule and serve.
Second Quarter: Get into Wing Formation
It’s time to break out one of football fans’ most beloved foods: chicken wings! Ours are roasted in-store daily for maximum tenderness and flavor. Try them plain or with your favorite flavor of sauce.
Choose from Korean (a guest favorite), Buffalo, Honey BBQ, Garlic Parmesan, Teriyaki or Sesame Garlic. Our 50- and 75-count wing platters are essential for feeding a crowd. Large wing platters require reheating for 20 minutes before serving, but you can pick up hot, ready-to-serve wings from our deli every day.
Looking for a side to pair with your wings? Whip up a plate of Baked Buffalo Cauliflower Bites, Loaded Chipotle Sweet Potato Totchos or Vindaloo Chicken and Guacamole Potato Skins. You might want to make extras—they’ll go fast!
Halftime: Huddle up for the Main Event
Don’t miss a second of the halftime show with this foolproof spread. Ribs are the perfect main event for your game day spread. Our recipe for Oven Barbecued Baby Back Ribs is a tasty way to serve them up. Most of the work can be done before your guests arrive, though you’ll need to take advantage of a time out in the first quarter to slather them with sauce and put them back in the oven for another hour.
Flank the ribs with our melt-in-your-mouth sliders like BBQ Pulled Pork; Pot Roast with Caramelized Onions and Fontiago Cheese; Cuban Sliders with Ham, Swiss Cheese, Pickles and Mustard; and Turkey, Havarti and Sour Cherry Sliders. Best of all, we’ll make them for you! Pre-order them today!
2nd Half: Extra Points
Chances are your guests will want a little something sweet to snack on during the second half, so having coffee and dessert available is always a smart play. Make it easy on yourself with some of our dessert favorites. No prep work or baking required!
Try The Fresh Market Pure Indulgence Dessert Bar Platter featuring our own signature Double Fudge Brownies, Blondies, Pecan Brownies and S’mores Brownies. You can also order one of our gourmet cookie platters ahead of time (featuring favorites like Chocolate Chunk, Honey Oatmeal Raisin and Kitchen Sink Cookies) or grab some pillow cookies and a mini cookie platter from our bakery.
You Can’t Go Wrong with Queso
Cheesy, creamy queso is a fan favorite for a reason. Serve it up whenever you like, preferably with a bowl of The Fresh Market Tortilla Chips. Try our medium-heat recipes, White Mild Queso or Hot Pepper Queso made with Hatch chiles, habanero and jalapeño peppers.
Here are 5 easy ways to dress up your queso with more bold, savory flavors:
- Stir in minced (seeded) jalapeño and top with crumbled bacon or chorizo.
- Swirl one of our new Squeeze Sauces over your queso—try Avocado, Hatch Sriracha or Orange Habanero.
- Add some chopped chipotle peppers in adobo sauce (or just some of the sauce) and top with chopped mango.
- Mix in some cooked ground beef or diced chicken and black or pinto beans, then top with guacamole and a Mexican hot sauce.
- Stir in some salsa (we recommend one of our Nom Nom Salsas) and top with fresh cilantro.
Here are some of our favorite DIY dips, ranging from five minutes of prep to make then bake. Each of these dips is satisfying and full of flavor.
